Abstract

Health promotion has become an increasingly central goal for the child health clinic. The study aimed to explore and describe how public health nurses understand a health-promoting approach and how they experience practicing it when interacting with parents at the child health clinic for children between 0 and 5 years old. The article is based on qualitative interviews with eight public health nurses, and the resulting data were analyzed using systematic text condensation. The study revealed that the public health nurses had intentions aligned with a health-promoting approach. They emphasized the importance of a validated attitude when promoting the parents’ involvement and sense of mastery. However, there seemed to be a lingering paternalistic undertone in the approach. The findings also suggested that the frameworks and demands within which the public health nurses worked could present conflicts and challenges in maintaining a health-promoting approach.
